Description

Parent: #314

Problem

Both LibreNMS and Dell OpenManage Enterprise can receive SNMP traps from network devices and servers. Need to decide which tool owns trap handling to avoid duplicate/overlapping alerts.

Options

  1. LibreNMS owns all traps — Dell OME forwards traps to LibreNMS. Single pane for network + server alerts.
  2. Dell OME owns server traps, LibreNMS owns network traps — split by domain. Each tool handles its specialty.
  3. Dell OME owns all traps — LibreNMS does polling only. Dell OME is the trap authority since it's purpose-built for Dell hardware.

Questions for user

  • Which approach? Recommendation: Option 2 (split by domain) — Dell OME for server/iDRAC traps, LibreNMS for switch/router traps.
  • Are switches (Dell PowerConnect) configured to send traps? To which destination(s)?

Dependencies

  • #339 (Dell OME deployment — user doing manually)
  • #338 (alert transports — defines delivery pipeline)
